Hey readers, im Yu Ling, a 2nd year from Interactive Media Informatics. Last Oct, i shared about my experience at Worldskills Singapore Qualifying Round.  And today I'm going to talk about the Web Design category which me and 2 other students participated in.

So here am I again to talk about the Worldskills Singapore Finals held at ITE College West at Choa Chu Kang. It was an 18 hour competition spread over 3days. Going to compete in the finals are me, Alisha Chiang and Loke Jun Ming.

We had worked for months to prepare for the 3 days. Hours and hours of intense training, staying back after classes and loads of practice at home. Even though training had been tough, we were well-prepared and ready to meet the challenge.

We had to create a interactive website using a given topic and given information. We were not given any internet access and had to use our knowledge and given resources to create a functional website that fits the given theme. We were given images and used Adobe Flash to create an interactive banner. Some of the tools we used were Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and Adobe Dreamweaver. The website included log in features, view members profile, admin features etc.

The closing cermony was held on the 26 Jan in which I recieved a Silver Medal and Alisha recieved a Medallion of Excellence. Our hard work and efforts have paid off after the tiring 3 days. We are grateful to all the lecturers who have guided us and taught us much. This competition has really tested our determination, endurance and patience.

A big congratulations to all the Temasek Polytechnic medalists!

Worldskills Competition Passes
Hello readers!

I'm Yu Ling from Year 2 of Interactive Media Informatics. So the reason I'm blogging is because I participated in Worldskills Qualifying Round 2010 - Web Design. The results have been just announced, and all 3 students representing Informatics & IT School have successfully made it into the finals!

Firstly I will share with you what's Worldskills is about. WorldSkills International is open to agencies or bodies which have a responsibility for promoting vocational education and training in their respective countries/regions.

It is held every two years and there are many and diversed categories ranging from web design, software applications to even cooking and caring. The qualifying rounds and finals are held by individual countries and the winner of each category will represent their country in competing on the international stage, in this case, London 2011.

For the category I participated in, Web Design, we had to spend 8 hours to design a website from scratch with functionaility such as login, register, posting of messages etc. The website will be like a portal or forum, something that is taught in our diploma in the subject Web Application Development.

The school provided us with training for about 2-3 months. We learnt coding languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. Training had been a tough process as it required a lot of patience and committment. But neverthless it was a very enriching learning experience and we had benefited much from it.

On behalf of the team, I thank our lecturers who have taught us everything they know to equip us with the neccessary skills for the competition. The journey has been long and tedious, but the effort has been worth it.

To all the juniors and freshman, you can be part of this if you dare to take up the challenge! It will be a tough yet enriching journey, but the effort will be worth it!

And now that we have successfully made it into the finals, we will continue training and work hard to go to London 2011!
The long awaited update by me... in the midst of my pile of markings... *excuses excuses excuses

Anyway, i'll let the pics do the talking :)

Our prata outing, sans Alvin who was still in Brisbane then. Owe you one, Al.

Well, not too long ago, our students were involved in a photoshoot for Adobe, even 2 of our lecturers were involved, only my backview was involved :(

Worldskills 2008

This is a grand-scale competition every two years that we push our students to participate. After months and months of training, 3 of them - Daniel, Kaye and Amalina went to the Singapore Finals.

Then... we received news one morning that Amalina is the winner!!! Yay, representing Singapore in the Web Design category. Director says WorldSkills is equivalent to the Olympics...

So she will jet off to Calgary, Canada next year to compete amongst the other countries' champions.

A yummy dinner treat by the director to thank the trainers and the students for their effort, Andrew, Sankara, Rick and i also had a little part to play... tee-hee.

Ok, then moving on to TP Rawkz. It was a great success; from the feedback of the sec-school leavers, IIT school was the best, in terms of our enthusiasm, spirit and projects (of course!)

IIT Rawkz man...

Here are some projects we showcased for our diploma IMI. We tried to push the boundaries of interactivity... we don't even have to use the mouse anymore... we can use our hand and body gestures to interact.

Here is JC, our SIG president, quizzing the rawkers about IMI and giving out prizes after they played our very own F1-racing game created by our students.

After TP Rawkz, we held an immersion course for interested students so that they would understand more about our course, learn to create animation in Flash and stand a chance to win an iPod Touch... Woohoo...
The workshop was conducted by the students. They are just too great :)
Animation + Immersion = Animmersion

Our sports day - IMIND Day
Another student-run event where all Yr 1, 2, 3 single each other out...
The class spirit ... either lend your voice or strength, everyone plays a part to help their class stand up to their (friendly) opponent.

After weeks of block teaching, it was presentation time...
hooray for them but I now got to do the markings...

Always a time for work, and a time for play...

The blogger team met up once again for food and laughter, and just soak in the year-end mood of things... with Alvin but sans Daryl this time...

Hey folks... thanks for all the effort man! See you next year :)
IMI ooi...
